Shingles are the first line. Not the only one.

Portland gets most of its rain from October to May. Shingles shed most of it. The layers underneath stop the rest, and most leaks we see start at one of them.

  1. 01
    Architectural shingles. The weather surface.
  2. 02
    Synthetic underlayment. The backup layer.
  3. 03
Ice and water shield. At eaves, valleys and every penetration.
  4. 04
Drip edge and flashing. Where most leaks start.
  5. 05
The roof deck. Checked board by board, replaced where soft.

[The shingle, underlayment and ice-and-water products you install, once Tim confirms.]

Questions

What people ask first.

Short answers. Call if yours isn't here.

Can new shingles go over the old ones?

Sometimes the code allows it. We recommend taking the old roof off, so we can see and replace soft boards underneath instead of covering them.

What if it rains during my roof job?

We open only as much roof as we can cover again the same day, and we tarp it at night.

Do you work with insurance claims?

We can photograph the damage and write up the repair for your claim. Your insurer decides what's covered.

How long does a roof replacement take?

Most houses take a few days on site. Size, steepness and what we find under the old roof change that, and we give you the schedule in writing.

How long does a roof last in Oregon?

It depends on the roof, the attic ventilation and the upkeep. Read the full answer.
